Works directly with public schools, with program availability to schools based on 40% or more children in low cost lunch program. Program began at Fir Grove Elementary this year and needs more community volunteers. Volunteers commit to two half hour sessions reading to a child and assigning home reading of SMART materials. All those interested in volunteering can contact SMART at 503-937-4800 for a great way to volunteer and really make a difference in a child's life.

Action: Jeff will contact Jason Wachs, Program Coordinator City of Beaverton to see if this is a viable request for city matching funds grant. If yes, then proper information and details will be gathered to complete the grant application with the city prior to the deadline.
OLD/NEW BUSINESS:
New Business: As an information item, Barbara Wilson announced that she had attended the Beaverton City Council meeting in mid-August 2006 and asked the Council and the Mayor to sign on to Mayor Greg Nickels' US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement. The City Attorney reviewed the document and approved it for the city.
In mid-November Mayor Rob Drake signed the Agreement. Beaverton is now the 7th city in Oregon and the 346th city in the nation to have signed onto the Agreement. The pledge is to attempt to reduce carbon emissions in the City by 7 percent by 2012. Barbara indicated she isn't sure how to proceed from this point and asked for suggestions from the group. She said she was tentatively thinking of approaching other NACs and explaining what each citizen can do to reduce carbon emissions. Bill Young indicated the HNAC could be used as a "dry run" venue for a neighborhood association presentation if Barbara wished to put something together. .
Meeting adjourned at 8:45 pm.
